The Northern California AHEC focuses on three areas of workforce development and training; pipeline projects, support to clinical student rotations and continuing education.
Pipeline Project:  Through a partnership with College Options and Mountain Valleys Health Center, we developed an interactive curriculum for all 10th and 11th graders at Butte Valley High School, located in Dorris, an agricultural community of less than 700 people near the Oregon border. Medical staff from the clinic assisted and encouraged the students to consider careers in primary care or allied health.  Those students interested are given opportunities to volunteer or job shadow at the local clinic. Appropriate students will also participate in field trips to College of the Siskiyous Rural Health Sciences Institute, Oregon Institute of Technology and UC Davis Medical School.  Due to the success of the pilot, the health careers orientation curriculum was delivered at all high schools in Shasta and Siskiyou Counties during the month of February. Our partnership with College Options made it possible to leverage their connections with the schools, counselors and students.  We look forward to seeing the specific results from this next wave of the pipeline.

Support to Clinical Rotations:
The Northern California AHEC partners with Shasta Community Health Center (SCHC) to provide housing for third year medical students in UC Davis Rural PRIME program. The students are completing clerkships in the Redding pediatrics department of SCHC.  This partnership is an opportunity to familiarize these students with the valuable service provided by community health centers. The investment is anticipated to encourage their consideration of career opportunities in our Northern California community clinics after graduation.

Continuing Education:  In an effort to provide state of the art training for the primary care and allied health professionals in our member clinics, we coordinate trainings on a variety of subjects pertinent to their needs and emerging programs. CME’s are provided to participants through partnership with a variety of providers.

Workforce Planning:  The Northern California AHEC has partnered with the North Coast AHEC to produce a Healthcare Workforce Plan for Northern California.  The plan will include data gathered from all member clinics and professionals in our region and recommendations to address unmet training and development needs.
